RENO — A man who pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and causing a deadly crash has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Eduardo Rodriguez-Viurquiz, 36, was sentenced this week in Washoe County District Court, the district attorney's office announced Friday.
Rodriguez-Viurquiz, who is a citizen of Mexico, will be eligible for parole after serving at least 20 years. He's expected to be deported once he's released.
An investigation by the Nevada Highway Patrol found that Rodriguez-Viurquiz was speeding in the shoulder of Interstate 580 in Reno when he hit a vehicle that likely was pulled over because of mechanical problems.
Korbin Preston, 20, and Megan Dube, 19, were standing behind the vehicle. Preston died instantly. The force of the crash threw Dube into the interstate where she was run over by another vehicle. She spent more than a month in the hospital, authorities said.
Rodriguez-Viurquiz was arrested shortly after running away from the scene of the January 2019 crash, authorities said.
Toxicology reports showed he had a blood-alcohol content of .31 and also had drugs in his system.
