The Veterans Affairs Southern Nevada Healthcare System is set to administer its 10,000th dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Friday.

Since giving its first dose of the vaccine on Dec. 16 to workers at the veterans hospital in North Las Vegas, the local VA system has vaccinated more than 5,200 veterans and about 2,400 healthcare workers.

The VA is also expanding who is eligible for the shot at the North Las Vegas medical center. Veterans 80 and older can get their shots on a walk-in basis during normal vaccine clinic hours, weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Veterans age 70 to 79 can make an appointment by calling 702-791-9185.

Veterans younger than 70 should wait for the VA to contact them once scheduling is open to their age group.

Questions about vaccine and scheduling should be directed to primary care providers, not the reservation line.

The Veterans Affairs Southern Nevada Healthcare System boasts vaccination rates above national averages for both veterans and healthcare workers: 8.89% and 74.14%, respectively. The national average is 8.07% for veterans and 61.89% for healthcare workers.
