Las Vegas fire department loses longtime employee to COVID-19

The Las Vegas fire department is mourning the loss of a longtime employee who died from COVID-19 earlier this month.

Gary Myers, who was an administrator in charge of equipping Las Vegas Fire & Rescue with supplies, including medical and firefighting gear, succumbed to the virus on July 18, department officials said today.

Myers began his career with the fire department in 1994 as an administrative support assistant. He also assisted in the agency’s fire prevention program.

"He had a deep compassion for cats and sports,” officials said in a news release. “He had a cheerful personality, was always willing to help anyone any way he could and was well liked by everyone in the department."

Since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, COVID-19 has killed 5,874 people in Nevada, which is reporting nearly 354,000 confirmed infections, most of which have been tallied in Clark County, according to state data.
