LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

We can lead fight against poverty

When discussing international relations, politics and development, it is easy to get stuck thinking about the sheer magnitude of all the global issues being faced right now.

The United States has the privilege of being able to navigate these complicated issues. We have a position of power and while living in this bubble of Western hegemony, we can choose to ignore global issues and decide to focus solely on domestic issues.

However, this privilege also means we can choose to focus on global issues and use our power to help make change. Many global issues have one root cause: poverty. Disparities in wealth and resources create the environments of conflict, violence, hunger and destruction. If we want to address these issues, we have to move past feeling overwhelmed by them and into political activism.

I want to thank one Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., for co-sponsoring the Girls Lead Act, which will help point the United States in the right direction for addressing global poverty and inequality.
