LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

White grievance fuels GOP rage

On Jan. 6, President Donald Trump incited a rag-tag assemblage, who were chafing at perceived grievances. Armed, they stormed the Capitol. They sprayed police officers with chemical agents, attacked journalists, destroyed their equipment, and marauded the building.

Terrified, legislators cowered under their desks, while Secret Service agents whisked Vice President Mike Pence to safety. These seditionists’ murderous rampage personified a deadening truth decay.

In the aftermath, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Trump was morally and practically responsible for the Jan. 6 insurrection, but voted to acquit him. And five months later, McConnell compounds his depravity by blocking an independent bipartisan inquiry meant to determine what happened, and why.

New York Times columnist Charles Blow,in his June 3 column “Republicans are chipping away at democracy,” assessed Trump accurately. Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan really means make America white again. Consider his fervor for military bases named after Confederate soldiers, Confederate statues and Confederate monuments. Contrast that with how he raged against Colin Kaepernick and NFL players, mostly Black, as they protested police killings of Black and brown people without accountability, indictment or prosecution.

Remember, Trump recoiled at the thought that Haitians, Africans, and Central Americans would migrate to America. However, he beseeched Norwegians to immigrate.

Trump-fixated GOP minions care not a whit about chipping away at democracy. In fact, they’re using dynamite: by limiting who can vote, limiting who can enter the country and compelling the overwhelmingly white super-rich to bankroll policies that cater to a white nationalist agenda.

They believe white makes right.
