LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Be prepared for more gun deaths

Get to know a funeral director.

Through the first five months of 2021, gunfire killed more than 8,100 people in the United States — about 54 people per day. In 2020, people purchased more than 23 million guns, a 66% increase over 2019. Nevada was among the states with the largest increases in gun sales and gun-related deaths.

Gun proliferation in the United States is out of control. Congress continues to oppose common-sense gun laws in favor of personal freedoms.

People must realize that soon, a member of your family, or someone you know, will be a victim of gun violence. Shootings have killed people at birthday parties, churches, grocery stores, fast food restaurants, and even at funerals. Nowhere is safe.

So be prepared. A good mechanic, a great doctor or dentist, a good attorney and a trusted accountant are all people every family should know. A funeral director should now be included in that group.
