LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Treat wildlife with reverence

I commend Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones for introducing a resolution condemning wildlife-killing contests in the county and applaud the commissioners for passing it unanimously.

A majority of southwestern states have already banned these events, which are neither for sustenance, wildlife management or conservation; rather, they involve chasing down animals to kill for cash, prizes and a thrill. The majority of hunters do not recognize them as ethical hunts.

The species targeted in these contests are relevant to our ecosystem, helping control the rodent population and providing other benefits to nature. Furthermore, the indiscriminate killing of these animals often results in orphaned cubs or pups who cannot survive without their parents and will die from starvation, dehydration, exposure or predators.

When we consider that Nevada’s wildlife belongs to everyone, we should expect that all residents have a say in the way our wildlife is treated; hopefully, the Nevada Wildlife Commission will follow up on this resolution to pass statewide regulations ending these massacres.
