Rain, cool temperatures expected through Friday

A slow-moving storm system will bring rain and cooler weather to the valley for the next couple days before sunny skies and warmer temperatures return for the weekend.

There is about a 40% to 50% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms today and Friday, with high temperatures of 56 degrees and and overnight lows of about 41, according to the National Weather Service. Most of the rain is expected after 10 or 11 a.m.

There were some light showers today in the Henderson area, but the sun was poking through scattered clouds later in the morning.

Light snow is possible in the surrounding mountains above 4,000 feet, with 1 to 3 inches expected today and Friday above 7,000 feet.

A winter weather advisory was issued until 10 a.m. today in Esmeralda County, about 180 miles northwest of Las Vegas. A total of 3 to 5 inches of snow was expected to cause hazardous driving conditions, especially around Goldfield, the weather service said.

The storm system, centered in California but blanketing the region, should move slowly over Southern Nevada on Friday before drifting east Friday night over the Four Corners region, according to the weather service.

Sunny skies should return to the valley for the weekend, with a high Saturday of 66 degrees and a low of 43. Sunday’s forecast calls for a high of about 70 degrees and a low of 47.
