Nevada officials honor officers who died in the line of duty

CARSON CITY  — State officials and law enforcement officers from throughout Nevada gathered in the state capital to commemorate three officers who lost their lives while on duty over the past year.

In a ceremony on the Capitol Mall, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Joe Lombardo, Nevada Department of Public Safety Director George Togliatti and Nye County Judge Kent Jasperson honored members of their departments who passed away in 2020 and 2021.

Nevada Highway Patrol Sergeant Ben Jenkins was shot and killed in White Pine County in March 2020 after stopping to assist a disabled driver on the highway.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lieutenant Erik Lloyd died from complications from COVID-19, which the department said he contracted while in the line of duty.

Pahrump Justice Court Bailiff Gerard Smith also passed away from COVID-19 in January 2021.
