College students in Nevada could be required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine to attend classes in the fall semester as campuses fully reopen after pandemic closures.
The Nevada System of Higher Education intends to ask the Board of Regents and State Board of Health for approval to implement a vaccine requirement, officials announced Thursday.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration would first have to lift the Emergency Use Authorization designation used to distribute the vaccine, officials said.
“I fully support the implementation of a mandatory COVID-19 vaccine requirement for students once it is legally viable,” NHSE Chancellor Rose said in a news release. “Our students cannot afford further disruptions to their education if the virus is allowed to spread unabated, which continues to be a concern especially during the colder months.”
The system’s institutions are planning to return to mostly in-person learning for the fall semester, which begins in late August.
