Clark County schools continue to require face masks for now

First Day of In-Person School

Students arrive at Rex Bell Elementary School on the first day of in-person school, Monday March 1, 2021.

The Clark County School District will continue to require students and staff to wear masks on campus, despite state and federal guidelines allowing people who have received the coronavirus vaccine to ditch the face coverings.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday said vaccinated individuals no longer need to wear masks, followed by a similar announcement by Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak.

Some Nevada businesses, including a number of Las Vegas casinos, quickly dropped mandatory mask policies.

“At this time, out of an abundance of caution, we must ensure that masks continue to be worn to protect our students and staff,” the School District said in a statement.

While vaccines are widely available, they have only been approved for children who are at least 12 years old.

The School District, however, said it could update its position next week, based on guidance from Southern Nevada officials.

The Clark County Commission, which is leading the local mitigation effort, is scheduled to discuss mask mandates on Tuesday.

There are just two weeks left in the school year, which was mostly conducted virtually. Students returned to in-person learning in March and still are on a hybrid schedule, attending classes two days in person and three days online.
