Las Vegas Sun editorial cartoonist Mike Smith was honored by Editor & Publisher with an EPPY Award for best editorial/political cartoon for websites with 1 million or more unique visitors, the magazine announced Monday.

The contest recognizes the best in digital media from an international list of nominees and received more than 400 nominations in about 40 categories. Among the winners were the Boston Globe (Best Daily Newspaper Website), ESPN (Best Sports Website) and CNN (Best Mobile News App).

Smith’s work has appeared for more than 35 years in the Sun, dating to when he was a student at Loyola Marymount University in Southern California, and includes depictions of seven U.S. presidents and plenty of Las Vegas notables. Smith won for cartoons on Trumpism, police accountability and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“The Sun is enormously proud to present Mike’s work to our readers, and has been for the last three-plus decades,” said Ric Anderson, editorial page editor for the Sun. “We’re pleased that his peers have honored him with this award, one of many he’s received during his remarkable career. It’s satisfying to see others recognizing Mike as one of the absolute best at what he does.”

Las Vegas Weekly, the Sun’s sister publication, won a pair of EPPY awards — best weekly or non-daily newspaper website (fewer than 1 million unique visitors) and best overall website design.
