Elijah Espinoza threw touchdown passes to Alvaro Zentino and Andrew Bowen to help the Las Vegas High football team beat Sierra Vista 27-8 for its first playoff win since 2014.

“Seven years,” coach Erick Capetillo said of the playoff drought. “I am just proud of the kids. They work extremely hard every week.”

Las Vegas trailed 8-7 at halftime, likely the product of the first playoff action for a roster dominated by underclassmen, Capetillo said.

Adonis Jackson had a 15-yard touchdown run in the second half, and Tommy Vibabul recovered a fumble in the endzone for the other points.

Las Vegas (7-3 overall) hosts Shadow Ridge next week in the state semifinals.

“Shadow Ridge has been one of the two favorites to win state all year,” Capetillo said. “They have a difficult offense to contain with the triple option. Our defense has been playing well. They will definitely be put to the test.”
