A North Las Vegas man is facing first degree murder charges in a fatal shooting last weekend just east of the Las Vegas Strip.

John Kirby, 22, was arrested in the death of Jettoni Zendel, 27, who was found with a gunshot wound near a bus stop on Paradise Road, north of East Sahara Avenue, according to the warrant for Kirby’s arrest.

Zendel was transported to Sunrise Hospital, where he later died.

Zendel was on a bus Sunday just before 8 p.m. when he pressed the button for the wrong stop, according to the warrant. Another passenger made a joke causing an unidentified person to laugh at Zendel.

A few minutes later, the unidentified suspect, Kirby and Zendel agreed to exit the bus near Paradise and Sahara so they could fight, police said.

Once they left the bus, Zendel but down a backpack and threw a punch at Kirby, police said. Kirby produced a handgun and shot Zendel once in the chest before leaving the scene.

Police used surveillance video from the bus and footage from other bus routes to identify the involved parties.

Kirby was also identified by videos from his social media accounts that revealed distinct tattoos on his left hand and forearm, which matched the footage from the bus, according to the warrant.

Additionally, a review of footage from a bus Kirby was riding that morning showed him sitting on the bus pulling out a handgun with an extended magazine from his waistband and waving it around, police said. Kirby was seen getting on another bus about an hour after the shooting.

Kirby is in custody at the Clark County Detention Center, according to online records. An attorney was not listed on the court summary. He has a court hearing scheduled for Monday.
