Nevada man accused of shooting at cars north of Reno

RENO — Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a 44-year-old Nevada man accused of assault with a deadly weapon and child endangerment after they say he was shooting at cars near his home in the high desert about 150 miles north of Reno.

David Garfield of Fish Springs was being held Friday in the Washoe County Jail without bail on four criminal counts.

A SWAT team joined deputies responding to the area Thursday afternoon after reports of a man firing shots on a road with usually heavy traffic because of an aviation event that attracted thousands, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Witnesses told investigators Garfield blocked the roadway in front of his home with his vehicle and used a gun to intimidate motorists, firing his weapon several times into the air near vehicles stopped on the road near his property, it said.

“Some of the stationary vehicles had families and small children inside,” the sheriff’s office said.

Garfield was booked on suspicion of one count of assault with a deadly weapon and three counts of child abuse or neglect. Jail records indicate a court appearance is pending. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer or will be appointed one.
