LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

This pandemic is not political

I sent this letter to my nephew, who is against getting vaccinated, in the hope that I could change his mind. Others may be interested in it, as well.

Good morning, Nephew.

When you put something up on Facebook that I disagree with and I respond to it, I am not putting you down. I am disagreeing with the subject matter. That is called communication. As long as people are communicating ideas, that is freedom. We grow because we communicate with each other rather than shoot each other.

I am concerned about a lot of things I see happening in this nation that are hurting my fellow human beings.

When a sitting president refers to a pandemic as a Democratic hoax and convinces a group of people that this is true, and therefore you should resist attempts to convince you to take it seriously, I find this dangerous.

This nation has chosen to do whatever it takes to protect its people. This is a good thing. I do not find this to be political. We are all in this together.

There is a series on Netflix produced by PBS called “The Brain with David Eagleman.” It is not political or related to COVID-19. I would recommend watching season 1, episode 5. About halfway in, Eagleman talks about how human beings can turn on each other and commit genocide. It scared the hell out of me, because I kept thinking we may be heading in the wrong direction.

Editor’s note: The letter was lightly edited for clarity and length.
