Customers wait to be called at the DMV on West Flamingo Road, Monday, June 15, 2020.

Technology fees collected from the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles in 2020 and 2021 will be refunded in the form of cash beginning in December, according to a news release from the agency.

Money eligible to be returned will be from technology fees collected from July 1, 2020, to Aug. 31 of this year.

Funds will be returned as cash in $1 bills, according to the department. Refunds will start to be dispersed in mid-December, according to DMV Director Julie Butler.

Butler, according to the news release, said the cash refund program, approved by the Legislature’s Interim Finance Committee, was found to be the most cost-effective option available.

Technology fees ceased to be collected in May in response to a Nevada Supreme Court decision that month that upheld a district court ruling that voided 2019 legislation authorizing an extension of the fee program.

Close to $6 million in technology fees will be returned.

A $1 technology fee was applied to most DMV transactions, including driver’s licenses, state identification cards, vehicle registration and titles, and business licenses.

No appointment will be needed for customers to collect their refunds, according to the department, and no proof of payment will be required.

To avoid walk-in lines, Butler said customers are encouraged to collect their refunds the next time they need to visit the DMV.

Commercial fleet customers will receive their refunds by mail.
