UNLV is partnering with TheDream.US, a scholarship program for young immigrants, for the 2022–23 academic year, officials announced today in a news release.

TheDream.US scholarships are available for those with Deterred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or temporary protected statuses, as well as for those who came to the United States prior to Nov. 1, 2016, before they were age 16. The program’s National Scholarship covers tuition and fees upwards of $33,000 for a bachelor’s degree. About will 10 UNLV students receive the scholarship.

“For many immigrant students, federal student aid is not an option, so alternate forms of aid, such as scholarships, play a vital role in helping these students achieve their full educational potential,” said Juanita P. Fain, UNLV’s vice president for student affairs and interim chief diversity officer, in statement.

Applications open Monday and close Feb. 28.

"At UNLV, we believe every student should be able to pursue their goals through higher education,” UNLV President Keith E. Whitfield said in a statement. “DACA students face incredible obstacles yet believe in the power of higher education to improve their lives, and we want to do all we can to remove financial barriers and help set them on a path to a bright future.”

TheDream.US has over 70 partner colleges in the U.S. that have awarded more than 7,500 college scholarships. The program’s more than 2,100 graduates range from health care professionals to computer scientists to social justice workers.

Nayelli Rico Lopez, resource coordinator for the UNLV Undocumented Student Program, is an alumna of TheDream.US.

"TheDream.US provided key support to me and other students and in a way validated our dreams and our very existence,” Rico Lopez said. “Just as it did for me, this scholarship will ensure UNLV students are able to stay enrolled and focused on achieving success.”
