Las Vegas teen accused of attacking teacher ID’d; bail set at $500K

Bail has been set at $500,000 cash for a Las Vegas high school student accused of punching, strangling, and sexually assaulting a Clark County School District teacher, court records show.

Jonathan Eluterio Martinez Garcia, 16, appeared Friday in Las Vegas Justice Court before Judicial Officer Daniel Westmeyer, who ruled that prosecutors provided “clear and convincing evidence that no less restrictive alternative to monetary bail” would satisfy the court’s interest, according to court records.

Additional bail terms included Martinez Garcia must stay away from the victim — who has not been identified — under a no-contact order. He also must stay under high level electronic monitoring, according to court records.

As of noon Saturday, Martinez Garcia remained in the Clark County Detention Center.

Metro Police said officers were dispatched about 3:30 pm. Thursday to Eldorado High School in the 1100 block of Linn Lane and found the teacher being treated by medical personnel. She was transported to University Medical Center in stable condition, police said.

Martinez Garcia had gone to the teacher’s classroom to talk about his grades, and at some point he began punching the teacher and strangled her until she lost consciousness, police said.

After the attack, Martinez Garcia left the classroom, police said, and another CCSD employee found the teacher.

School District police later found Martinez Garcia and arrested him without incident in the 5700 block of Cedar Avenue, according to Metro. The address is about a half-mile south of the high school.

Martinez Garcia faces counts of sexual assault, attempted murder, robbery, and battery with intent to commit sexual assault and will be charged as an adult, police said. He is scheduled for another court appearance Tuesday, according to court records.
