Person dies after rescue from flood channel near Las Vegas Strip

A person died after a swift-water rescue in a flood channel Thursday night just east of the Las Vegas Strip, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

Metro Police called on firefighters about 10:30 p.m. Thursday to help rescue a person from a flood channel near Giles Street and Mandalay Bay Road, fire department officials said.

The person was taken to University Medical Center, but they died, officials said. The Clark County Coroner's Office will release the person's name after their family has been notified.

No other information was immediately available. 

The Las Vegas valley received about 0.58 inches of rain Thursday, according to the National Weather Service, upping this year's monsoon season rainfall total to 1.28 inches. T

This monsoon season is the wettest since 2012, when 3.63 inches of rain fell in the valley, according to the weather service.

A flood watch is in effect today for the Las Vegas area until 1 a.m. Saturday, according to the weather service.
