Marcellus Moore reeled in a 40-yard touchdown pass and also had an interception for Basic in a 14-0 win at Desert Oasis on Friday night.

Moore's interception, and a sack from nose tackle Domingo Cleveland, paced a dominant effort from the Wolves' defense. The Diamondbacks were held off the scoreboard in their first game without quarterback Tyler Stott, who graduated last year.

But the scoreboard doesn't tell the whole story in head coach Jeff Cahill's eyes. Basic had three would-be touchdowns called back due to penalty.

"We had some penalties that we've got to clean up," Cahill said. "We could've done a better job tonight, but our defense was strong."

The Wolves had a strong finish to last season with wins over Del Sol and Clark that put them into the playoffs, culminating in a 49-21 win over Chaparral. Basic lost to Henderson rival Coronado in the next round.

Basic rebounded to finish 5-5 in 2021 after three consecutive losing seasons. The Wolves are expected to be a top contender in 4A, but Cahill knows the offense needs to be better for next week's matchup against Centennial.

"It's going to be a tough test for us," Cahill said. "But I know our guys are up to the challenge."
