The Foothill High football team surrendered 28 unanswered points tonight at Austintown Fitch of northeast Ohio in a 42-10 loss to open the season.
Foothill only trailed by four points in the second quarter after Ryan-Blake Wilson caught a touchdown pass from Mason Dew on a deflected ball.
But Austintown Fitch scored at the end of the first half and then went on a long scoring drive to open the second half in wearing down the Falcons.
“We couldn’t stop the run. They had a big time running back, and we couldn’t stop him,” Foothill coach Vernon Brown said. “Midwest football is all about winning in the trenches, and we got worn down on both sides of the ball up front. “
Dew passed for about 125 yards, and kicker Diego Souza made a short field goal.
The schedule won’t get any easier for Foothill, who hosts Inglewood of California in the home opener next week.
“We learned some lessons tonight. We’ll get better,” Brown said.
