LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Thirst for power defines GOP now

The Nov. 23 editorial, “Community, political leaders must end rhetoric that inspires violence,” finishes by noting what Republicans needs to do if they are serious about protecting innocent lives and making people feel safer. Well, they aren’t serious about those things.

Listen to what Republicans say if you want to know what they are serious about. They are serious about growing their base, winning elections and extending their power. The way they do these things is by stripping women of reproductive rights, accusing Democrats of being child molesters, and attacking immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community and other minorities. This is what feeds their often-violent core voters.

Some people write about how strange it is that so-called traditional Republicans don’t exert some control over their fringe personalities, such asReps. Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene, Sen. Lindsey Graham and Trumpists.

The mainstream group will not rein in the extremists because they want their votes. Do not hold your breath waiting for the return of your father’s Republican Party. It ain’t going to happen.
