After one season at UNLV, quarterback Tate Martell is done with football.

The former Bishop Gorman star has “retired,” according to a social media post by Joe Arrigo of Franchise Sports Las Vegas.

The retirement marks the end of a long and winding amateur career for Martell, who first rose to prominence by leading Bishop Gorman to three straight state championships from 2014 to 2016. He won Gatorade National Player of the Year honors as a senior and was featured on the reality show “QB1: Beyond the Lights.”

After committing first to Washington and then to Texas A&M, Martell finally settled on Ohio State. He was rated the No. 56 player in the nation by 247 Sports and the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback, and he sparkled in limited action as a redshirt freshman in 2018, completing 23-of-28 passes for 269 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

Martell transferred to Miami after that season and spent two years with the Hurricanes, but could not secure the starting quarterback job. He attempted one pass in 2019 and was asked to move to wide receiver, then opted out of the 2020 season.

Last offseason he entered the transfer portal again, and UNLV coach Marcus Arroyo was willing to give him an opportunity to compete at quarterback. Martell was beset by injuries throughout training camp, however, and was never fully healthy in 2021. He appeared in just two games and completed 2-of-6 passes for 27 yards.

Martell spent five years in college, but due to his redshirt year and the COVID-19 year he still had one season of eligibility remaining.
