The April 22 letter “Pipeline would lower oil prices” makes a good, cogent argument, except for two things.
First, the price of oil is never simply based on the amount of available oil. Like other products, bears the price the market will allow. And that price has been manipulated by the relatively few sources of oil.
Secondly, the writer’s arguments ignore the impact on the future need for gasoline and oil for producing electricity.
If one wants to argue supply, he must also discuss demand. The writer may not believe in global warming but the car manufacturers do. They are betting that electric vehicles are the future.
Does the world need more oil pipelines or more water pipelines?
