A substitute teacher was arrested Thursday for allegedly bringing a dagger to Shadow Ridge High School, police said.

Officers arrested Aaron Bronley, 22, at his Las Vegas home Thursday evening without incident, Clark County School District Police said. He was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on a count of possession of a dangerous weapon on school property, police said.

Bronley was talking with students while substituting at the northwest valley school on Thursday when he showed them a dagger — a knife with a straight, fixed blade and a hilt, similar to a small sword — that he had in his backpack, School District Police spokesman Lt. Bryan Zink said.

Students reported what they saw to other school staff, Zink said.

The teacher did not display the weapon during a classroom lesson or in a threatening manner, but “it’s still inappropriate and illegal to have on campus,” Zink said.

Daggers — along with firearms, BB and air guns, paintball guns, nunchucks, switchblades, billy clubs, throwing stars and brass knuckles — are specifically prohibited on school grounds under state law. Possession of a weapon on school grounds is a gross misdemeanor in Nevada.

Bronley was given a one-year emergency substitute license in October by the Nevada Department of Education, according to the state’s online educator license database.

The School District said he had been a substitute since February. He has been removed from the district’s substitute pool, officials said.
