2nd suspect arrested in death of Las Vegas slots parlor manager

A second suspect has been arrested in connection to the death of a casino manager earlier this month, according to Metro Police.

James Holmes, 54, was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on Wednesday on counts of open murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery, Metro said in a release.

Police arrested Samuel Fredrick Schmid, 28, on May 16 in Southern California and booked him at CCDC Friday on similar charges, police said last week. A Las Vegas judge ordered Schmid to appear Tuesday “by any means necessary” after refusing to appear Monday.

Officers responded after 6 p.m. May 11 to a report of a robbery inside a Dotty’s slot machine parlor in the 6100 block of West Flamingo Road. A person reporting stated an employee — later identified as 60-year-old Alicia Gibellina — was run over by a 2012 Mercedes GL5 allegedly stolen by Schmid, according to police.

Gibellina was found lying in the parking lot unresponsive upon police arrival. She was transported to the University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Homicide detectives say that Schmid entered the parlor and shoved a patron to the ground, taking their purse, police said. Schimd then exited the Dotty’s and got into the Mercedes, where he backed into Gibellina before fleeing, police said.

Both suspects remain in custody at CCDC, jail records show. Holmes made an initial appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court on Wednesday and is scheduled to appear again May 31, according to his case file. It’s unclear at this time if an attorney is representing him.

Schmid is scheduled to appear Thursday in court, and did not have an attorney listed on his case summary, records show.
