A man who had held a gun to his father’s head was injured during a police shooting early Wednesday, North Las Vegas Police said.

Officers arrived and made contact with the son, who fled on foot, police said. An officer ordered him to drop his weapon but he refused, and the officer fired his gun once, striking the man, police said.

Police identified the suspect as Armando Gutierrez-Salinas, 37. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he was reported in stable condition, police said.

Gutierrez-Salinas was booked in absentia at the Clark County Detention Center on counts of assault on a protected person with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, prohibited person in possession of a firearm, possession of stolen property, three counts of discharging a firearm where a person may be endangered, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and domestic battery with a deadly weapon, police said.

No officers were injured, Cuevas said.

The officer involved in the shooting will be identified within 72 hours, police said. The officer has since been placed on routine paid leave pending the outcome of an investigation, police said.
