Man killed in shooting during gathering in West Las Vegas

A man was killed and a suspect is in custody after a shooting Sunday in West Las Vegas, according to a Metro Police release.

Officers responded to a report of shooting in the 1200 block of Hassell Avenue on Sunday at around 2:30 p.m. Police found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police stated.

He was transported to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation determined the suspect to be Jason Spellman, 38, who was located and taken into custody later that night in the 3300 block of North Decatur Boulevard. He was booked into Clark County Detention Center and charged with open murder with the use of a deadly weapon, according to the report.

Based on police accounts, Spellman and the victim were at a gathering moments before the shooting. The victim left the gathering and was walking in the area when Spellman drove up and fired multiple gunshots at him. Spellman then fled the area before officers arrived, the report stated.
