LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Our democracy is in danger

In American filmmaker and historian Kenneth Burns’ recent documentary, “U.S. and the Holocaust,” he states that the Holocaust reminds us of “the fragility of democracies” and how “there is nothing more important than maintaining those democracies.” Burns also opines that, “We’re in perhaps the most difficult crisis in the history of America.”

We know through the Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol’s proceedings that former President Donald Trump and his minions were complicit in the insurrection that resulted in loss of multiple lives and significant property damage. We also know that after leaving the office of president, Trump removed voluminous top-secret records to his Mar-a-Lago resort in violation of the Espionage Act. And yet, why haven’t congressional Republicans criticized or condemned Trump for his heinous and traitorous conduct?

Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., said it best that “public servants should be focused on serving the public — not any special-interest group — and good governance should be an expectation, not an exception.”

The only thing congressional Republicans are focused on is partisan politics.
