Thunderstorms sparked multiple fires and left several cars stranded in floodwaters this morning in the Las Vegas area, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

Lightning is suspected of starting eight palm tree fires, while rescue crews responded to reports of three cars stuck in the water, officials said.

None of the passengers were in danger or were already standing outside the vehicles, officials said.

Part of Nellis Boulevard was closed as a result of vehicles trying to get through the water and stalling out, officials said.

“This serves as a great reminder not to cross flooded areas,” Deputy Fire Chief Warren Whitney said in a statement. “Cars can be easily swept away in fast-moving floodwater.”

A flood advisory was issued today until 11 a.m. for the southeast valley, including Henderson, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters warned of the potential for minor flooding in Las Vegas, Henderson, the Sam Boyd Stadium and Green Valley areas, Paradise, Harry Reid International Airport and Silverado Ranch, officials said.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms were forecast for today before 9 a.m., with mostly sunny skies and a high near 97 degrees the rest of the day, according to the weather service.

The rest of the week is expected to be sunny and mostly clear, the weather service said.
