LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Put an end to needless agony

I read with interest and great empathy the March 26 guest column “Dying mom pleads for medical aid-in-dying law” by Lynda Brooks-Bracey, regarding proposed legislation being heard this session.

I feel terribly bad for Brooks-Bracey and my heart goes out to her and her family. Cancer is a terrible disease and no one should have to suffer the agony of being affected by it.

Every word Brooks-Bracey so eloquently wrote is the truth. I’ve experienced it firsthand. This past July, my late wife was diagnosed with metastatic ovarian cancer, and for the next eight months she fought a courageous and valiant battle against it, but she passed away March 2.

I witnessed her terrible suffering for eight months and no matter how brave she was, and no matter how hard the doctors tried to treat her and ease her pain, nor how hard I tried to help and comfort her, she still suffered until the end.

The suffering experienced by any person and family who have to endure this terrible scourge of a disease is so unnecessary and senseless. I can’t help but believe that if every elected member of the Legislature was to experience what Ms. Brooks-Bracey and her family are experiencing, or what my wife and our family have just experienced, there would not be a single vote in opposition of passing the aid-in-dying law.

Nevada should be willing to demonstrate compassion for those in need of compassion.
