The Republican Party is obsessed with “wokeism.” Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida says his state is “where wokeism goes to die.”
In her response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas attacked the “woke mob.”
As best I can understand from my MAGA-to-English dictionary, “wokeism” refers to people who believe every American citizen has a right to equal protections under the law and who also recognize that some Americans, such as women, the LGBT community, and racial and religious minorities, have not always had their rights protected.
Equality is part of the Pledge of Allegiance: “with liberty and justice for all.”
Equality is taught in Sunday schools where we learn we should “love thy neighbor as thyself.”
Equality is an American value, it is a Christian value and it is a constitutionally protected right, so I don’t understand why Republicans believe equality is a threat to them and why they want to reject it. I will leave it to the sociologists and political scientists to answer that question.
