Bobby Petrino leaving UNLV football for Texas A&M

Football Picks of the Week 2015

Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino, right, looks on as sophomore quarterback Kyle Bolin participates in drills at the Louisville football practice facility in Louisville, Ky., Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015.

Less than three weeks after being hired as the offensive coordinator at UNLV, Bobby Petrino is packing his bags again.

According to an ESPN report, Petrino is heading to Texas A&M to assume the OC position under Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher.

Petrino, 61, was hired by new UNLV head coach Barry Odom on Dec. 15 and even tweeted, “Ready to get to work.”

Petrino had spent the previous three years as the head coach at Missouri State and before that had successful stints as a head coach at Louisville, Arkansas and Louisville again.

Known for his aggressive, spread-the-field offenses, Petrino directed high-scoring attacks at every stop and coached quarterback Lamar Jackson to a Heisman Trophy campaign at Louisville in 2016.

Petrino was set to make $300,000 per year as the offensive coordinator at UNLV. It is not yet known what his salary will be at Texas A&M, but previous Aggies OC Darrell Dickey was making $850,000 per year.

Odom will now have to find another offensive coordinator for the 2023 season. He has already named James Shibest as special teams coordinator, and former Arkansas linebackers coach Michael Scherer is reportedly in line to be named defensive coordinator at UNLV, though it has not been an official announcement yet. In all, Odom has hired seven full-time coaches to his staff.
