Metro reports more vehicle pursuits in Las Vegas in 2022

In a report released by Metro on Thursday, the department averaged 16 officer-involved shootings, eight of those resulting in a fatality, over a five-year period.

Metro Police saw a significant increase in vehicle pursuits in 2022 and resulting injuries, according to data recently released by the department. 

There were 82 vehicle pursuits in 2022 with the previous four years averaging 52 annually. 

Seventy-five of the pursuits were started because of the subject’s involvement in a felony offense, the release says. Two were initiated because of a misdemeanor and five started because of a traffic offense. 

More than half (43) of the vehicle pursuits reached speeds more than 80 miles per hour with seven of the pursuits reaching speeds at 120 to 139 miles per hour. 

About 32% of the pursuits ended in injuries to officers, the subject and/or uninvolved citizens. 

The report shows five of the pursuits resulted in injuries of uninvolved citizens, with seven ending in the subject and uninvolved citizens being injured. Officers were injured during three of the incidents. One incident resulted in the injury of an officer and subject. Nine of the pursuits ended in only the subject being injured.
