Former Nevada Lt. Gov. Lisa Cano Burkhead is returning to her education roots.

Cano Burkhead was appointed president Cristo Rey St. Viator College Preparatory High School in North Las Vegas, the school announced today.

Cano Burkhead, a former high school principal in the Clark County School District, served as Nevada’s lieutenant government for about 13 months through January, after being appointed by then-Gov. Steve Sisolak. She was defeated in November’s election by Republican Stavros Anthony.

Cano Burkhead is familiar with Cristo Rey, working as a consultant with the school to establish long-term goals with administration and advise on structures for academic success, officials said in a statement.

Most Cristo Rey families have limited economic means. The Cristo Rey model involves students in the classroom four days a week. On the fifth day, they participate in a work-study program with law firms, utility companies, gaming corporations and other businesses and nonprofits.

“It is an honor for me anytime I can work alongside students and educators, and as a first-generation Latina and college student, being named president at Cristo Rey St. Viator means so much because I have the privilege to lead a school that serves other first-generation college students,” Cano Burkhead said in a statement.

“I have dedicated my life’s work to removing barriers for students and parents, and I look forward to continuing that work for the students and families at Cristo Rey St. Viator," she said.
