Centennial High School boys and girls basketball coach Karen Weitz has long been considered one of the nation’s elite prep coaches.

A national television audience will witness her in action this afternoon.

Weitz, one month after coaching the Centennial Bulldog girls to their eighth straight Nevada state championship, will return to the sidelines to coach the West in the McDonald’s All-America game at the Toyota Center in Houston.

It marks the start of a busy offseason for Weitz, who in June will be inducted into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame.

Weitz isn’t the only local who was pegged for the event, with Bishop Gorman coach Grant Rice selected to coach the West in the boys game.

They were nominated for the honor by Coronado High coach Jeff Kaufman, one of the leaders of the Nevada Basketball Coaches Association.

The girls game is at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN2. The boys follow at 6 p.m.

And more than Weitz and Rice will be on the bench, as both coaches brought members of their high school staff to serve as McDonald’s game assistants. Kaufman is also coaching the boys.

The McDonald’s game features the top 24 boys and girls players in the nation, including Bronny James — LeBron’s son — playing for Rice on the West.
