Reno woman sentenced to prison for buying guns for son, a felon

A Reno woman convicted of charges related to purchasing firearms for her son, a felon, was sentenced to prison in a U.S. district court case today, according to a news release from the U.S. Justice Department.

Gail Manney, 48, initially found guilty of illegal acquisition of firearms in December 2022, was sentenced to 18 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release by U.S. District of Nevada Judge Howard D. McKibben.

According to court documents, in April 2021, Manney illegally purchased seven firearms from a licensed dealer for her son, who is a convicted felon and prohibited by law from buying or possessing firearms. At the time, Manney completed a transaction form representing herself as the actual buyer of the firearms.

“Straw purchasing is not a victimless crime,” stated Acting Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson. “The act of willfully providing a prohibited person with a firearm by purchasing the firearm on their behalf puts firearms in the hands of criminal organizations and violent criminals which presents a grave threat to the safety of our communities.”

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a nationwide program by the Justice Department with the goal of reducing violent crime.
