Las Vegas police: 26 rounds fired in shootout with robbery suspect

A total of 26 rounds were fired in a shootout last week between two officers and a suspect in a string of commercial robberies, according to Metro Police.

The incident started as a stakeout a couple hours before the shooting about 11 p.m. Thursday atop a parking garage in the 4000 block of West Flamingo Road, police said.

Police confronted the suspect, Matthew Glunt, 48, who ignored verbal commands and opened fire with a handgun as an officer deployed a stun gun, Assistant Sheriff Yasenia Yatomi said. Officer body camera video played at a briefing today showed police ordering Glunt to the ground before shots ring out.

A detective and an officer returned fire, striking Glunt several times, Yatomi said. Glunt was taken to University Medical Center, where he was in stable condition, she said.

No officers were seriously injured, she said.

During the shootout, Detective Christopher Gowens, 45, fired 15 rounds and Officer Joshua Leach, 33, fired six rounds, Yatomi said. Glunt, who got off two rounds before police shot back, fired five shots total, she said.

The shooting followed an investigation into a series of robberies starting May 14 around Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, Yatomi said. In each case, the suspect demanded money with a note, she said.

Glunt faces three counts of burglary, three counts of robbery and three counts of attempted murder of a police officer, Yatomi said. He also faces one count each of resisting a public officer with a firearm, being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, she said.
