The Kats Report Bureau on this Independence Day is Terrace 1 (which is the only terrace) at our Newport Lofts office. Sirens have been blaring already today, and from our high perch, we feel the heat of another 110-degree ...
Wranglers President Billy Johnson said today that Las Vegas’ entrant in the ECHL has reached an agreement with owners of the downtown Plaza to play home games in a leased facility to be built on that property for five years beginning with the 2014-15 season in October.
Dozens of Olympic athletes are in Las Vegas this week to compete in the World Financial Group Continental Cup at the Orleans Arena, the last major curling competition until next month’s Winter Olympics in Russia. “The best curlers in the world are going head-to-head here, and the next time they’ll see each other will be in Sochi in competition for Olympic medals,” said event co-manager Jon Killoran, CEO of the Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition.
Fur will fly this weekend inside the Orleans Arena as dozens of four-legged competitors vie for the “top dog” title. Police dogs and their cop counterparts will put their job skills on show Sunday as part of the 23rd annual Metro Police K-9 Trials. Metro and the nonprofit Friends of the Las Vegas Police K9s are hosting the event, which is free to the public and begins at 8 a.m. Sunday.
First-year Las Vegas Wranglers coach and general manager Mike Madill listed all of the things he had to learn on the fly. The tasks included finding housing for players, arranging work visas and, probably most important, finding the right players.
More than six years after her son’s death at a hotel construction site, Debi Koehler still is hoping for justice. Her hope stems from a ruling Friday in a lawsuit that aims to hold Boyd Gaming Corp. responsible for the death of two maintenance workers in 2007 is moving forward despite the company’s latest attempt to have the case dismissed. Clark County District Judge Gloria Sturman denied Boyd’s motion for summary judgment, noting several times the facts of the case were egregious and compelling.
Dana White frequently passes at opportunities to get nostalgic. The UFC president is constantly asked to reminisce about the early days of operating the mixed martial arts organization, and how he helped transform it into a multimillion-dollar league and the world’s fastest-growing sport. White could easily talk about those difficult days when the organization was operating at a deficit of $44 million and how some viewed the sport as barbaric. Times quickly changed, however, with White leading the effort. Friday, he was inducted at the Orleans Arena into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame, being honored for growing the ...
Valley High basketball coach Bill Bobier had several rules he strictly enforced with his players. One stands out for former star Freddie Banks: If you were going to dunk during a game, you better make it. So, when Banks missed a dunk against Western, he immediately realized there would be a price to pay — even if Banks’ miss was the result of being fouled. Bobier got the most of his players through tough love, winning four straight state championships at Valley from 1980 to '83. Friday, Bobier will receive the most prestigious honor for a local sports figure when ...

Las Vegas will host an international wrestling event in 2015 that is expected to draw thousands of people to the city and could be one of the last links the sport has with the Olympic Games. The 2015 World Wrestling Championships are slated for the 9,500-seat Orleans Arena in September of that year and will be the first and largest qualifying event to send athletes to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The ripple effects of the NHL lockout are being felt in the Las Vegas Wranglers’ ECHL. The labor dispute is prompting cancellation of regular-season NHL games, sending European teams into a feeding frenzy to sign the NHL-caliber talent and pushing out players who previously made a living playing overseas. “It’s extremely unfortunate,” said Ryan Mougenel, Wranglers coach and general manager. “There are a lot of players who deserve the right to be playing. It’s tough to sit by and watch NHL guys take journeymen’s jobs.” Charlie Cook is one of the players cast aside, but luckily for the defenseman, he’s ...
Across the Atlantic Ocean, thousands of athletes are representing more than 200 countries in the 30th Summer Olympics this month. This week in the west valley, there is a smaller, but just as passionate, international event taking place. On Wednesday, Las Vegas had its own parade of nations at Red Rock Resort, where representatives of 43 countries carried their flags onto the convention center stage in the opening ceremony of the World Hip-Hop Dance Championship.
