Carrot Top has worn his orange hair in curls since he started his stand-up career 20 years ago, but for a Las Vegas Magazine shoot, he allowed it to be ironed flat. The results were astonishing.

Funny Face: Carrot Top's stage act a mask of contradictions

In his show at Atrium Showroom, Scott Thompson (known as Carrot Top onstage) refers to himself as a "mean clown." For his Las Vegas Weekly cover story, he sat for a photo session in which half his face was painted as a clown.

This all started with a kindly nun and a simple bell. Sister Benedict was her name, the principal at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Rockledge, Fla., a town of about 25,000 that sits on the state’s east coast, near Cape Canaveral. The town is heavily populated by NASA scientists and engineers who over the years sent American astronauts into orbit and onto the moon. The young son of one of those NASA engineers was Scott Thompson, a diminutive redheaded kid who kept to mostly kept to himself, uninterested in the other uniformed St. Mary’s students.

Early life: Father was a scientist at NASA during the space program's heyday in the 1960s. In 1983, as a freshman at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla., he appeared in his first stand-up routine and also performed during open-mic nights on campus.
Early career: Built his comedy routine on zany stage props in the 1980s and 1990s and was named Entertainer of the Year and Comedian of the Year in 1993 by the National Association of Campus Activities. In 1994, he won the American Comedy Award for Best Male Stand-Up.
Career in Las Vegas: Limited engagements 1997 to 2006 at MGM's Hollywood Theatre. Began performing regularly at the Luxor in 2006.
Notable: Regularly appears on TV in guest appearances on "The Tonight Show" and "Live with Regis and Kelly." Was a spokesman in AT&T commercials. Had a TV show from 1994-1996 on the Cartoon Network called "Carrot Top's AM Mayhem." Starred in 1998 film, "Chairman of the Board."
