    Ray Smith’s game-high 29 points helped the Las Vegas High basketball team down visiting Basic 84-68 today in the Sunrise Regional quarterfinals.

    Third-quarter outburst shows Foothill basketball the real deal
    The Foothill high basketball team overcame a shaky first-half Thursday against host Basic, struggling with the Wolves’ full-court press and hostile crowd in falling behind by eight points at halftime. Then came the third quarter. Game over. Foothill outscored Basic 33-7, easily beating the press for uncontested points and draining a few 3-pointers on the way to a 84-63 victory.

    When the Valley High basketball team fell behind by three points Tuesday at halftime against Basic in the first round of the Sunrise Regional tournament, the Vikings’ players could have easily been discouraged. After all, they went from being undefeated in the Northeast League two weeks ago to closing the regular season on a two-game losing streak — a skid not expected from a team expected to contend for the region crown.

Programs at schools such as Bishop Gorman, Palo Verde or Centennial surely first come to mind for most Las Vegas-area prep sports followers. Well, think again. The Foothill High basketball team definitely needs to be in the conversation.

    Sharp-shooting Starr guides Foothill to 11th straight victory
    Foothill junior Austin Starr may have established himself as the best three-point shooter in town this season. It’s almost impossible to find any flaw with his game beyond the arc. Starr doesn’t miss very often either. He went 7-for-11 on three-point attempts Wednesday night at Basic, leading Foothill to a 71-67 victory.

    Foothill sharpshooter Cox leads Falcons to win against Basic
    Foothill High junior guard Greg Cox had a game-high 19 points, including draining five 3-pointers, and the Falcons overcame a slow start for a 62-42 victory Friday against host Basic.

    Coronado started Southeast division play with a statement victory Tuesday night against Basic. The Cougars blew out their Henderson rivals 87-53.
  • Desert Oasis boys top Basic in season opener
    If the Desert Oasis High School boys basketball team was nervous before its first game of the season, it sure didn’t show. After junior Kenny Lewis’ quick bucket against Basic High School to open Wednesday’s game, the Diamondbacks turned their 14-5 opening quarter into a 56-44 win over the host Wolves.

    Basic boys without starter Carducci to open season
    The Basic High boys basketball team was on the verge of breaking through in the Southeast Division last winter. The Wolves took fifth in the Henderson-based league, missing the playoffs by one game. It needed a victory in the final week against Coronado or Foothill — two of the league’s playoff teams — to reach the postseason.
