When Tony Sanchez became the Bishop Gorman High football team’s coach two years ago, he gathered game film from the previous fall to become better acquainted with the program he was inheriting. As he watched hours and hours of film, one thing became glaringly obvious: There were talented performers at several positions. And while those players can be partially credited for the Gaels unprecedented success, Sanchez will be the first to confirm it’s been the program’s less-heralded players — those athletes whose careers will likely end after high school — who have keyed the domination.

Gorman, Palo Verde renew gridiron rivalry with spot in the state finals at stake

    November 26, 2010

For some, the outcome was surprising. Not only was the perennial power Bishop Gorman High football team defeated by rival Palo Verde in the Sunset Regional finals two years ago, the Gaels were humiliated in the second half of a 50-14 defeat.Gorman avenged the loss to Palo Verde in last year’s playoffs, but the sting of the 2008 defeat will surely be on the players’ minds Saturday when the schools renew their rivalry in the Sunset finals. You see, just like the 2008 contest, the game will be at Palo Verde’s home field.

The first thing Liberty coach Rich Muraco did when he reached the practice field Wednesday evening was distribute hand warmers to some of his players. For Liberty, there’s more to preach this week than assignments, discipline and ball control. The coaching staff also must prepare their team for how to deal with cold weather leading up to the 1:00 Saturday afternoon kickoff in Reno against McQueen in the state semifinals.
