In this July 1, 2014 photo, tens of thousands of residents gather to march in downtown streets during an annual pro-democracy protest in Hong Kong to push for greater democracy. Many in this prosperous city had already feared that Hong Kong’s future as an open society as well as a semiautonomous part of China was in jeopardy in the face of perceived growing intervention from Beijing.
