This isn't Brian Hedlund's typical sampling ground. He mostly sticks to the hot springs of the Great Basin in searching for organisms that he calls "biological dark matter," a term coined by one of his collaborators at Stanford University. It refers to the fact that 75 percent of all microbial lineages on Earth have yet to be studied, especially those that live in extreme conditions and are difficult to grow in the lab.
