Tiananmen Square 25th Anniversary
Wed, Jun 4, 2014 (12:02 p.m.)
A quarter century after the Communist Party’s attack on demonstrations centered on Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989, the ruling party prohibits public discussion and 1989 is banned from textbooks and Chinese websites. Authorities in Beijing blanketed the city center with heavy security Wednesday on the 25th anniversary of the bloody military suppression of pro-democracy protests centered on Tiananmen Square. Tens of thousands of people were expected to gather Wednesday evening at the park in the former British colony, holding candles aloft to remember those killed in their protests in Beijing.
