Boulder City Hospital searching for a lifeline
Wednesday, April 22, 2009
Lost in the debates about Boulder City problems during the primary elections was the Boulder City Hospital. This was to be expected, because it is not a city government problem. The hospital is an independent, nonprofit organization run by a foundation and a board of local people.
Let's hope June election helps unify City Council
Wednesday, April 15, 2009
Now that the primary election is over, the battle lines are clearly drawn for the general election June 2. The two candidates remaining for the open council seat, Cam Walker and Bill Smith, quite apparently have differing views on some important Boulder City problems.

Commitment to bypass seems to be on back burner
Wednesday, April 8, 2009
Strangely enough, only one candidate for City Council, during the primary, spent much time talking about the Boulder City Bypass. It seems to be fading farther and farther from consideration as one of our more important issues.

The sun is shining on Boulder City
Wednesday, March 18, 2009
Boulder City recently received a nice public relations boost from a full-page article in the Sunday edition of our sister newspaper, the Las Vegas Sun. The article mainly dealt with our solar energy plants, but it couldn't have done better for Boulder City if it were an advertisement.
Golf course prominent, but not our only issue
Thursday, March 12, 2009
To close or not to close? That is the question uppermost in the minds of many Boulder City voters. Whether 'tis nobler in the Boulder City mind to continue the Boulder Creek Golf Club with those hopes that spring eternal and suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous claims, or by opposing to close the course, end them?
Birthday bash coinciding with St. Paddy's
Thursday, March 12, 2009
Post 31 of the American Legion is all geared up for its annual St. Patrick's Day party and Legion birthday bash on, of course, March 17. Most of the details were finalized during the post's regular monthly meeting the first Tuesday of the month.
Candidate forum an interesting experience
Wednesday, March 4, 2009
During my 26 years in Boulder City, I can't recall a local election that has stirred up as much discussion and interest as the upcoming contests for City Council. This was in evidence Feb. 23, when the organization BC Facts held a candidates' night with nine council hopefuls present to answer a list of questions.

One cultural activity that has been missing from the Boulder City scene for the past 23 years is amateur theater. We have a thriving ballet company, we have excellent art activities, and we have The Red Mountain Music Co.

Bill could change the way the RDA operates
Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009
The future of the Boulder City Redevelopment Agency was once more under question at the recent meeting of the RDA board. The City Council sits as the board.
Boulder Creek costs more closed than open
Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009
It is interesting to note that, while the Boulder Creek Golf Course is still a thorn in the side of many residents here, in Arizona, Las Vegas developer Jim Rhodes has won the fight to get approval for a golf course and the water to maintain it for his 25,000-home commuter development.
Councils deserve credit for though budget decisions
Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009
There should be a National City Council Day on the order of National Secretary Day or National Take Your Kids to Work Day. A day on which we take time to sympathize with our City Council members and maybe pat them on the head and say, "There, there, it'll be all right."
Committee gives young offenders a second chance
Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009
There are a number of excellent programs under the umbrella of the Boulder City Police Department unknown to a majority of residents. I was particularly intrigued by Boulder City's unique Juvenile Conference Committee.

American Legion Post 31 got off to a good start at its monthly meeting Jan. 6. Three plaques of appreciation were awarded to members who contributed unusual time and effort to post activities during the past year.
Government practice at stake during election
Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008
Looking at the major problems facing the Boulder City Council this coming year is almost like looking into a mirror. Most of the same major problems are facing us that we had on the agenda last year.

Titus' visit should offer much-needed answers
Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008
Congresswoman-elect Dina Titus is coming to Boulder City. She has stated her intention to visit the Tuesday City Council meeting. We like to think it's at least partly because of the open letter to her we wrote a few weeks ago. Or perhaps it's because I kept bugging the staff about an interview or an answer to the letter.
Public humiliation isn't the way to solve problems
Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008
In my opinion, the Boulder City employee evaluation meetings, open to the public, are an abomination. The three recent meetings to evaluate, in turn, the city manager, the city attorney and the city clerk were particularly inane.
An open letter to Congresswoman Dina Titus
Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008
Now that you have defeated Boulder City’s favorite son, Jon Porter, for representative of our 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, many of us are naturally worried that we will drop off the map as far as federal funding is concerned.
