UNLV fan trying to go viral to help Rebels land Shabazz Muhammad: Monday, July 18, 2011; Apparently, UNLV fan Josh Meeter is taking the 'enough screwing around' approach when it comes to doing his part to help his beloved Rebels lure in the biggest hoops recruit in the city's history. Meeter, who by trade is an art director, created a 30-second fake Nike commercial set to a T.I. track, portraying Shabazz Muhammad waving his arms to a crowd while wearing a No. 15 UNLV jersey.
Mountain West hoops power rankings: Feb. 28: Monday, Feb. 28, 2011; For the first time this season, we have a change atop the rankings, and really, there's very little debating it. Meanwhile, the middle of the pack continues to be a jumble, and will be the most interesting portion to watch as we head into the final week of the regular season. Let's get down to it ...
Mountain West hoops power rankings: Feb. 22: Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011; The top two spots are again solid, but under the surface, the rest of the league continues to shift around. UNLV's monster win at Colorado State over the weekend and Utah's wild buzzer-beater to upset New Mexico in The Pit forced a decent amount of movement. If you're wanting to see San Diego State's stranglehold of the No. 1 ranking loosen, check back in a week, because it will if the Aztecs don't take care of BYU on their home floor next Saturday. Mountain West hoops power rankings: Feb. 8: Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011; Once again, San Diego State and BYU have separated themselves from the pack a bit. And, again, the league's most intriguing race is between the Nos. 3 and 5 slots in the league standings. Colorado State is back up to third, UNLV has dropped to fourth and New Mexico's off weekend kept them right there at fifth. But did they move around at all in this week's Power Rankings? Well, that's why you look here every week, right?

So, you can essentially consider this mid-year report card of sorts. The cream is now starting to rise, and we're seeing the true identities of the league's contenders and pretenders. Mountain West hoops power rankings: Jan. 17: Monday, Jan. 17, 2011; Sorry to disappoint those looking for a bunch of shake-up near the top this week. Most of the movement is among the league's current bottom-feeders, but a couple of early upstarts are holding strong in the middle of the pack. Lets get to it.
Mountain West hoops power rankings: Jan. 11: Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011; OK, so after a few boring weeks of little shift in the weekly rankings, we finally have something substantive to go off of with a week of conference play in the books. I remind you: No cursing.
Mountain West hoops power rankings: Jan. 4: Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011; League play is officially here, as Colorado State came back from a surprising double-digit first half deficit to defeat Wyoming in Fort Collins, Colo., on Tuesday night, 73-60. That said, here's the final non-conference Mountain West hoops power rankings of the winter (well, sort of, as it'd be unfair not to count CSU's win in its resumé, right?). Mountain West hoops power rankings: Dec. 21: Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010; Sadly, I'm not shaking things up in the rankings this week. I have my reasons, and you'll have to read ahead to find out. Without hesitation, here is the second installment of the Mountain West Conference men's basketball power rankings.
Mountain West hoops power rankings: Dec. 13: Monday, Dec. 13, 2010; Before you say anything: Yes, it would have been logical to start this weekly blog entry at the beginning of the college basketball season. But, guess what? I didn't decide to do it until last week, so here's the first installment of my weekly Mountain West Conference men's basketball power rankings. After all, it's now a basketball league, right? This will be a weekly Monday feature from here until the end of the season.
ESPN's Kenny Mayne name-drops his UNLV chops in "Kenny's QB Camp": Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010; Kenny Mayne, in his years at ESPN, has without question established himself as the king of NFL and football satire. This time around, we get an actual glimpse into his past, when in what seems like another life, he was a backup quarterback at UNLV in the early 1980s.
UNLV places live web cam feed on construction of Mendenhall Center ... Stalk away!: Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010; It was March 3 when Lon Kruger held in his hands two checks, each for $3.5 million, given by Las Vegas Paving Corp. owner and CEO Bob Mendenhall. The money from Mendenhall made up the majority of the $11.7 million donated for the new men's basketball practice facility, which, of course, will be named the Mendenhall Center.
Five observations now that the MWC/WAC dust has (sort of) settled: Friday, Aug. 20, 2010; OK, so have you caught your wind yet from the Mountain West/WAC tornado that hit and shook up everyone's Wednesday afternoon and evening? Wednesday, a couple of the national scribes showed UNLV a little love when drawing up some über-premature polls for the 2010-11 season.
Despite MWC missing out on NCAA tourney's second weekend, 2011 will bring similar opportunities: Sunday, March 21, 2010; OKLAHOMA CITY — With a pair of double-digit losses in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday, the Mountain West Conference's chance to earn a little more national respect passed by the wayside. People can blame seeding by the selection committee, people can blame the league's TV deal throughout the regular season, people can blame whatever they want.
Well what do you know ... Northern Iowa's done this before: Friday, March 19, 2010; OKLAHOMA CITY — If Ali Farokhmanesh's 3-pointer from 25-feet out on the left wing in the closing seconds to beat UNLV on Thursday night wasn't the biggest shot in Northern Iowa hoops history, it's got to at least be No. 1a.
Let's talk brackets ... but don't follow my lead: Monday, March 15, 2010; I'll be honest - I'm one of those guys who every year walks around to my friends and co-workers with my freshly filled-out bracket, and will proclaim "Here are the answers, in case you're curious." It's a good thing people typically don't take my advice.

Since moving out west about two years ago, I've grown one heck of an appreciation for the rivalry between a fledgling Saint Mary's men's hoops program and perennial mid-major heavyweight Gonzaga.

Read Lunardi: Monday, Feb. 15, 2010; OK, so typically I will not try to give too much pub to these 'bracketologists' during the college basketball season, since all it really is for anyone at this point is a guess. There's still so much ball left to be played. However, as far as 'if the season ended today' predictions go, ESPN's Joe Lunardi is as reliable as they come.
Utah's Marshall Henderson: The Mountain West's newest villain: Monday, Feb. 1, 2010; For UNLV fans, a 73-69 loss Jan. 16 at home to Utah was pretty easy to forget. Sitting courtside, though, I stored the name Marshall Henderson away in my memory file for future reference. Why? Well, that night, the Utes' lanky 6-foot-2, 175-pound freshman guard looked like, well, an immature freshman.
UNLV 1990 championship ring for sale ... on eBay: Friday, Jan. 8, 2010; First off, I've got to give Ray Brewer credit for this find. He makes it a habit every here and there to take a look on eBay for championship rings on sale. It's always fun to look, even though dropping the dough on something someone else earned, I think, is pretty ridiculous.
Projecting the Mountain West's 2010 preseason football rankings: Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010; Well, color me stupid. I truly thought that TCU would handle Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl on Monday night. Every time this season when people thought the Horned Frogs would stumble, Gary Patterson's offense would throw up 50 points like it was going out of style. Until Monday.
