UNLV played great defense before an anemic crowd of about 11,000 or so. Die hard Rebel fans like me had an opportunity to see firsthand the increasing ability of Brice Massamba, Justin Hawkins and Anthony Marshall. Also on display was Chace Stanback's ability to dominate games when he desires to. He scored 16 along with Willis to lead the Rebels. We saw potential coming to fruition. Kendall Wallace was having an "on" night as well. One wonders if he can keep the switch in the on position until he graduates. He is fun to watch when he is "feeling it". We looked good. However we usually look good when we play teams like this. I still have doubts that we will look good when we play SDSU or New Mexico. If you match us up with teams like them along with teams like Baylor, K-State, Tennessee and even Texas A & M, all tall and athletic teams, we are unable to play with them. When Massamba, Santee, Shaw, Stanback, Willis and the whole gang can hang with these clubs, then we will have started to make the grade and move into a position to really develop. This is the standard. This is where we want to be. This is where we must be in order to avoid crowds like the one we saw last night. UNLV needs to learn that "Marketing" is not what we want. UNLV should take opportunities to reduce expectations. (Jim Boeheim of Syracuse is still saying his team is not that good. He knows how to understate and over deliver.) Stop all the marketing nonsense. Remember the "Rebelution"? This year it's "The Place to Be". Instead, just focus on building a strong program by recruiting strong players and playing strong non conference games (we have seen improvement here, but can we replace Pittsburgh State with say Georgetown or Duke? Consider replacing USC Upstate with Gonzaga or Saint Mary's). If you do that and play run and gun exciting basketball, you will once again be "The best show in town". You will be able to reduce your marketing expenses and increase your revenue. You will have created a demand that will far exceed your capacity.

While I don't hang out with the UNLV coaching at all, I do get the impression, from attending their functions and interacting with them, that they are a fine group of guys. They seem to be hard working individuals and appear to operate in the best interest of the school, players, fans and community. Overall I would say they are very likable and represent UNLV and Las Vegas in a very positive fashion. The problem is that we want greater results. I am sure they do too. It does look like we are starting to see a pattern now. This is what concerns us. Many of us are describing the same thing. We are attempting to convey to Kruger and his crew that we are not satisfied with the mediocre results that are now beginning to appear each and every year. All of us have opinions about what to do about it. The bottom line is that it is starting to look like their approach is not yielding the strong, dominate team that many of us desire. They can choose to stay the course and take a chance that their approach will yield better results. It is clear though that the roar of the crowd will get louder if the results do not change. It is my opinion that as a community of fans we have been patient and have provided the necessary tools for Kruger to succeed. Hopefully they hear the call that we are not satisfied. WE WANT A DOMINATING BALL CLUB. They would be making a mistake if they take the approach that we are just fans and fans are always like this.

As a rebel fan for almost 40 years I have mixed feelings about the loss to New Mexico last night. Certainly I hate seeing us lose anytime but especially at home. I am pleased however that the overall direction of the program under Kruger has certainly moved in the right direction. I wonder though if UNLV will ever return to national dominance, will it ever become a reality for us in my lifetime and or under Kruger. UNLV is a good "mid major" basketball team. They and our program are much better off than we were since Tarkanian was forced out. I remember the painful days under Massimino, Bayno, and Spoonhour. I also remember the lean days of the early 80's under Tark. The difference then was that we had not yet won a national championship. My expectations were lower then. Kruger has done a good job of righting our ship and putting the program back on solid ground. He has been good for UNLV. However a pattern is beginning to emerge. It appears that this is about as good as we get under Kruger. It appears that being a good mid major basketball team is about all we can expect with him. I say that with the thought in the back of my mind, "maybe next year will be the year"? Then I notice, I thought that last year and the year before and the year before. The pattern is the same as the year before. We appear to be good and have a great potential, then we fall and slip. All the while being told that things will get better and we are always a work in progress. I wonder if my expectations or desire to return to national dominance is just a pipe dream and one that cannot be realized in today's college basketball world. Maybe this is all I have a right to expect? Maybe UNLV will never return to a consistent contender for a national title. Maybe I am out of line with my expectations and should be satisfied that we are better off now. Maybe I should just be happy with our success and forget about the fact that we are unable to win the conference outright. Maybe next year will be the year"
