The Las Vegas Walk of Stars is honoring singer Gloria Estefan and her Miami Sound Machine husband Emilio Estefan today at the 48th star dedication ceremony. It’s the first time a couple has been recognized, and the event takes place in the new Crown Theater at The Rio at 2 p.m. The star then will be placed on the sidewalk in front of the Flamingo at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
Gloria and Emilio have just wrapped a Latin American tour, and before flying here today, I talked with Emilio, who promised that Gloria will be back to perform in Las Vegas before year’s end and that she’ll have a new album ready for next year. She’s played Caesars Palace on visits here.
Emilio is one of the most successful producers in music. Not only has he masterminded his wife’s career, but he’s also shaped, developed and led such stars as Shakira, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Jon Secada and many others. He’s been nominated for 30 Grammy Awards and won 19! Gloria herself has sold more than 90 million records and won seven Grammys.
Emilio told me that while he’s in Las Vegas, he’ll autograph copies of his bestselling book Rhythm of Success at Barnes & Noble. “It’s a motivational memoir that chronicles the journey from being a Cuban refugee and arriving in Miami and going after the American dream,” he told me. “It was four weeks in the No. 1 position of the sales charts.
“I was only 14 but wanted my freedom and looked to America. I worked very hard to achieve it, and here everything was possible. Gloria has done so well over the years, and we love Las Vegas. It’s a great city, and we’ve always had a good time there. We’ve both been working very hard, but we always have a lot of fun, and this was the perfect time to come to Las Vegas.
“We decided to accept the honor of a Las Vegas star because millions of people will walk by it over time because it’s there forever. We are the first couple to have a star together. There are very few couples on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Gloria has a single star there.”
The Las Vegas Walk of Stars memorializes celebrities who have made significant contributions to their fields and have helped shape the Las Vegas entertainment landscape. We will have photos of the star ceremonies and will post them right here at Vegas DeLuxe. Today’s 2 p.m. festivities at Crown Theater are open to the public.
